May 2, 2008 -- Kivalina, AK, U.S.A..Enoch Adams, a city official, reverend, and chief figure in the lawsuit initiated by the 400 person native village of Kivalina, Alaska, stands atop large sandbags buried in snow which demarcate the eroding seaward beach only feet from homes and permanent facilities. Kivalina is suing 20 oil companies for property damage related to global warming; the ocean pack ice forms later and melts earlier, leaving the town vulnerable to erosive winter storms and endangering their traditional subsistence lifestyle.
