A young Thai girl who is a victim of trafficking greets with a traditional 'wai' at a school where trafficked girls and prostitutes learn the skills of hair dressing, makeup, and massage in order to have a chance to escape their exploited past in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The school is part of the non governmental organization "Acting for Women in Distressing Situations" (AFESIP) which offers housing, education, training, and counseling. Founded by Somaly Mam, who herself was once a prostitute and victim of trafficking and domestic abuse, AFESIP has three facilities in Cambodia and works with other NGO's to provide long term care for the women. The hair dressing school was started in 1999, offers an eight month to one year course, helps graduates start their own businesses, and recently moved to handle a more students (up to 20).
