Ted, in plaid, and Eric, in blue, two Canadians from the Vancouver area, have taken up permanent residence in Chiang Mai Thailand, Ted with his Thai wife and Eric with his Thai girlfriend. While their stories are different, Ted's introduction to Thailand was through sex tourism and Eric's simply to escape depression and post traumatic stress from multiple accidents as a commercial truck driver, both can live in greater comfort in the relatively inexpensive Thailand, not work, support their partner's, and do things like build houses for themselves and their partners' families. Like many older expats, they have left behind caucasian wives and children and found younger Thai women. While Eric's sentiments towards his partner may be different, Ted, who is 62 years old, expressed that he does not have a idyllic, youthful love for his wife but that they care and have an understanding for each other. Plus, he says, the men can live like millionaires and for the women it's like they've won the lottery.
